Rio Ferdinand captain of England

Rio Ferdinand

So Rio Ferdinand will be the ‘new’ England’s first captain. Interesting choice as many were looking at John Terry to be named captain again after some inspirational displays for his club Chelsea. Also in contention was David Beckham but Fabio Capello seems to be keeping to his word that form alone can get you into the team.

Great tactic by the Italian as being named captain can bring out the best in some players, but it wasn’t the case for Steven Gerrard as Capello was clearly disappointed. Making Rio Ferdinand captain might bring out his best which has been missing in the international stage since the 2002 world cup. He seems to be playing very well at club level too this season and not making his trademark concentration lapses too often. Lets see if he can repeat his performance against a world class opponent like France. Also if he can display a captain’s game.
